| The north end of Kauai is famous for
the twelve miles of shoreline path that winds through various valleys
along the Na Pali coastline (Na
Pali Coast photos) and can be challenging on windy & wet days,
the path is narrow and at times drops off thousands of feet to the
ocean below and high winds can challenge the best hikers. This is
a strenuous hike and to walk the entire length of the trail requires
a whole day so hikers should come prepared to sleep the night and
bring adequate water and a soft foam mattress to sleep on and maybe
a blanket. A tent is an unnecessary option, unless you are unlucky
and encounter really heavy rain. A permit is required and are taken
for up to a year ahead. A permit for the Kalalau Trail can be obtained
by mail from the State parks dept 428OA Rice St., Lihue, HI 96766
or at their Lihue office. |
